Monique Pettway is a descendant of the Gee's Bend Quilters, a collective of African-American textile artists. She received her BFA in painting at Mass Art in 1991 and her MFA in sculpture at Pratt Institute in 1994. Monique has lived internationally and domestically, using various forms of expression. As the founder and director of Mesa Pegasus, a ritual trance-dance theater company, Monique has exhibited her works in addition to performing rituals from Norway to New York. Monique uses her work for self-healing and is currently in pursuit of a Doctoral degree in Psychology in efforts to find the key to how her art heals both herself and others.

Monique is a mixed-media artist who uses different forms of expression through sculpture, installation, and performance art. Monique's goal is to recreate the world around her though installations using handmade paper, tree branches, and fabric to house her sculptures. Her installations are lined with her pottery and often representative of the world long-past. This would be the same way to describe the theater that she directs, Mesa Pegasus, where she performs rituals that speak to her ancestors by working with the four elements.
Monique realized that she wanted to be an artist in high school. She found her voice as an artist in her first year of art school, when she realized that she could use art to heal her depression. She then began creating self-portraits using her own face and building cocoons where she could witness her own growth.
